Many of the hype surrounding the hybrid cloud have shown that they are using patterns that are public and private. So what makes a real hybrid cloud?

Although many business groups say they have mixed clouds, in fact they only have separate public and private clouds. Such an application pattern does not fully reflect the true value of cloud computing: Choreography, self-service automation, and the ability to add and subtract resources on demand by transferring workloads between the public cloud and the private cloud.

In the chaos of the new cloud computing era (caused by deliberate hype and cognitive obfuscation), the real hybrid cloud definition has lost its meaning. Both public and private clouds are built on a COTS cluster architecture that follows a standard automated orchestration that has the ability to extend and reduce workloads by adding and subtracting virtual machine instances on demand. However, some of the so-called "private clouds" are equipped with traditional components (such as hosts, etc.) that, while implementing the flexibility of the application, do not follow the COTS definition. This becomes a significant problem when mixing clouds are involved.

The difference between a real mixed cloud and a public cloud private cloud is the automated choreography across multiple types of cloud boundaries. However, if the private cloud is a traditional host, then this is virtually impossible, which means that the mixed cloud must all be based on cots.

Three key elements to realize a truly mixed cloud

A hybrid cloud should meet three key criteria:

The hybrid cloud should have a common-private cloud boundary orchestration to facilitate the seamless extension of instances to the public cloud for load or decrement.

The orchestration system should be able to assist in the implementation of data migration between different clouds.

Choreography should allow customers to freely change cloud service providers for lower prices and better services.

At present the industry is just implementing the first standard. The industry has a wide range of product offerings for general allocation, but its growth is too rapid and some of the fallout remains to be smoothed.

But when we look at the latter two criteria, we start to see the main difference between the so-called hybrid and the real mixed cloud in the market. VMware and Azure, for example, have built channels for data to their own public cloud. While this approach provides a more seamless operation, users need to give up their functionality to enjoy better prices and lose the opportunity to save as the daily rate falls.

In addition, owning a data management strategy is the key to implementing a sound mixed cloud. However, data management remains a weakness that requires further attention. The United States WAN link data transmission speed is relatively slow, which limits the user's ability to transfer large amounts of data. For example, a resilient application that scales to a public cloud needs to access 3TB of data for normal operation, but transferring 3TB of data on demand will be a big killer of time and cost. We need a way to make data available in a public cloud, and a way to synchronize data updates to internal instances.

So, which vendor can meet your requirements for a mixed cloud? Dell says the company's current products are in the right direction, while Red Hat is developing a roadmap for service development that is not vendor-related. The rest of the vendors are reserved for private cloud support, but close to similar broader connectivity. Because VMware and Azure want to sell their own services, they are not very dedicated to extending connectivity, but VMware does a good job of opening up the situation. As EMC launches storage arrays, the idea of being subject to vendors is becoming a thing of the past.

Mixed cloud use case

From archiving to increased load, the industry has many practical use cases for mixed clouds, many of which must be kept within the enterprise. Although the implementation of mixed clouds complicates the thinking process, different views further emphasize the need for flexible tools and better strategies.

Beyond the ordinary hybrid cloud, we have entered the world of Software as a service (SaaS). The mode of payment used is changing the face of the infrastructure, and the presence of large data services in the cloud is leading to more end-to-end services in different cloud computing beyond the user's own cloud. Handling simple public and private clouds will further highlight data management issues, as well as the integration tools that require the development of fast-connect applications. We expect the hybrid cloud to be a rapid development and a lot of competitive action in mixed cloud management.
