Sony Pictures recently said that after the widespread rejection of cinemas, "The assassination of Kim Jong-un" (The Interview) in the first four days after the premiere to achieve more than 2 million viewers, more than 15 million U.S. dollars.
The company issued a statement saying it made the film the most-grossing online film yet for Sony Pictures. According to Rentrak, a market-tracking agency, the "assassination of Kim Jong Un", released at Christmas, also earned $2.8 million in a limited screening of more than 300 cinemas, most of which are independent theaters.
Sony is likely to get more revenue from the film. The company's first published online box office data does not include sales or rental revenues on Apple's itunes. Apple announced the "assassination of Kim Jong Un" on itunes in Sunday.
BoxOffice.com had previously estimated that a 44 million-dollar film would be at least $20 million at the box office at the first weekend, if it were screened across the U.S.
The film was limited in some theaters after refusing to show "the assassination of Kim Jong-un" by violent intimidation of a large theater against the show, but Sony also provided screenings on YouTube, Google play and other sites on a VOD video-on-demand basis from December 24.
