Our eyes and brain have some special tendencies when looking at things and receiving image stimuli. These tendencies often help us to quickly identify things, and sometimes they can have what we call "illusions." Gestalt http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/7390.html "> Psychology An important concept is that "the whole is not equal to the sum of the individuals". For example, when we look at another person, we do not see his hands, feet, head, eyes, ears, and nose first These visual features combine to form a combination called "people." We observe the "wholeness" of people directly instead of the "individual summation" of other organs.

Gestalt psychology was developed by psychologist Max Wertheimer and others in the early 20th century, affecting so many other psychologists. Gestalt psychology of the visual rules, there are several main features:

1. Closure (Law of Closure)

When we look at things, we tend to regard many independent elements as a closed pattern. Our brain automatically fills the white space between the elements and the elements, forming a segment that does not exist. As shown in the figure above, we can think of a series of dots as a large circle, or we can think of a non-continuous line as a complete circle. This visual property is called closedness.

2. Similarity (Law of Similarity)

We tend to think of similar things as one, as shown in the figure above, when a series of boxes and a series of circular side by side, we will see as two rows of squares and two rows of circles, rather than as straight row. This is because the similarity makes it easier for our eyes and brain to organize similar things.

3. Proximity (Law of Proximity)

However, it is interesting that once the distance has been opened, we tend to think of things that are close together as opposed to something similar, at which time we see the two squares and the two circles as a straight line. From this we can guess that the weight of proximity may be greater than the similarity. Proximity is a feature that is often heavily used in the UI, for example, similar buttons that we'll consider as a group.

4. Continuity (Law of Symmetry)

Our brains tend to think of things as continuous shapes. For example, we do not think of the left picture as two rings that meet, but two curves that intersect. We also do not think of the right image as two rhombuses, but two straight lines that intersect. This may be due to the brain being more agile in handling consecutive things than in dealing with overlapping or discontinuous things.

Gestalt psychology of the visual rules can be widely used in many different areas such as user interface, art, design, photography. Gestalt psychology in addition to the visual perception, also advocates that our understanding of things, not just the visual access to information, but will be the information and the brain already stored cognitive, impression, experience to carry out Integration, after integration is what we really recognize and feel. Understanding our visual features will help us design a better interface.
