At the end of February, AMD bought the famous Low-power server manufacturer Seamicro at $334 million, which is certainly a significant event in the entire server industry. Seamicro, a former Intel partner, is focused on developing high-density and Low-power server products in large-scale cloud computing environments.
It was the first major acquisition by AMD CEO Courville Rory Read, and could be seen as a major move for AMD to compete for a future Low-power server market. Seamicro Micro Server, its power consumption is equivalent to One-fourth of the traditional server, only occupies one-sixth of the space. The Seamicro architecture, which can be simply viewed as a card size motherboard, is combined with CPU, DRAM, and ASIC into the chassis and connected through the Freedom Supercompute fabric.
