Remote Desktop is a new function of Windows XP Professional. By using this function, we can log on to a computer with the Remote Desktop function enabled through the network to view the desktop content of the computer, operate the programs installed on the computer to access all files saved on the remote computer.

However, this function has a limitation. If a user has logged on to the computer locally, if you want to log on remotely, the user who has logged on locally cannot continue to use the computer. Figure 1 ). If the quick user switch function is enabled on the remote computer, the local login user can only disconnect his/her session and return to the welcome screen. If the remote computer disables the quick user switch function, the user logging on to the local device must log off. Is there any good way for local and remote users to log on to and use the remote computer at the same time? Continue.

In the beta version of Windows XP Service Pack 2 Build 2055, the system that installed the patch once supported two users to log on at the same time, but I don't know why, in the final official version of Service Pack2, this function is canceled again. Fortunately, through a file in the beta version of SP2, we can still enable this function on our computer.

To use this method, make sure that your computer is Windows XP Professional and Service Pack2 has been installed. Then, you need to have the termsrv. dll file in SP2 2055.

First, make sure that your optical drive does not have a Windows XP installation CD, and then run "Services. msc opens the Service settings window, finds the Terminal Service, double-click the Open Properties dialog box, select disabled from the Startup Type drop-down menu, and restart the computer.

After restarting, open my computer window and enter "% systemroot %/system32/dllcache" in the address bar to delete termsrv. dll file. the dll files are copied to the % systemroot %/system32/dllcache and % systemroot %/system32 folders in order to overwrite the original files. Note: during this process, a dialog box similar to Figure 2 may pop up, reminding you that the system file has changed and you need to put it on the disc to restore the correct file. This is a normal phenomenon, and our purpose is to replace the existing system files, so don't bother, click the cancel button, and then click "yes" in the subsequent dialog box ".

In addition, you need to modify the registry and run "Regedit" to open the Registry Editor. In the left-side Navigation Pane, locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Terminal Server \ Licensing Core, create a New DWORD Value named "EnableConcurrentSessions" under this key and set the value to 1. Then restart the computer.

Then run "Services. msc opens the Service settings window, double-click the Terminal Service to open its properties dialog box, select "automatic" from the "Start type" drop-down menu, click "OK", and then click "start.

Next, we need to enable the Remote Desktop function, which is disabled by default. Right-click my computer icon and select properties. The System Properties dialog box is displayed. On the Remote tab, select "allow users to connect to this computer remotely, click the "select remote user" button next to it to add all users you are allowed to remotely connect to the computer. Figure 3 ). All the remote computers have been configured.

Return to the client computer on the client computer, which can be any version of Windows after Windows 95. However, except Windows XP, the Remote Desktop client components must be installed in other versions of Windows, for details, refer to the Windows Help file), open the Remote Desktop Connection component in the attachment/communication in the Start Menu, enter the name or IP address of the remote computer, and then click the "option" button next to it, enter the username and password of the account that can be remotely connected. Then you can set other options as needed. After setting all options, click Connect. After a moment, you can log on successfully. In this case, open the task manager of the remote computer and you can see it under the User tab. At the same time, two users are connected to this computer. Figure 4 ), the session column shows "Console" as a user logging on locally, while "RDP-Tcp #1" is displayed as a user connected through remote desktop.

To use the above method, you need to replace the system file. Although it can be successful, no one can guarantee that it will cause other problems. Therefore, if you have strict requirements on system stability and do not want to use this method, you can try installing Winconnect Server XP. The software can implement the same functions.

Winconnect Server XP is easy to use. After installation, You need to restart the system. After the system is started, you can directly connect to it through the Remote Desktop. After the Remote Desktop Connection is created, open the console of the software on the client and you can see that two computers have been connected to the local machine. Figure 5 ), in addition, the software also displays processes running in each session. According to official instructions, as long as the hardware configuration of the remote computer is sufficient, the software allows up to 21 users to create connections through the Remote Desktop function! This is amazing.

The two methods have already been described, and they have their own advantages and disadvantages: replacing system files is the most convenient method, and no additional software is required, saving investment, however, this method can only perform one local logon and one remote desktop Logon at the same time. The use of Winconnect Server XP is different. This method does not need to replace system files, ensuring system stability to the maximum extent, and allows Windows XP to allow up to 21 concurrent Remote Desktop logins, suitable for small company networks. However, this software is not free of charge. The trial version can only be used for 7 days, and the connection created each time cannot last for more than 30 minutes. It will be automatically disconnected after timeout.

Therefore, for home users or users who only want to have an additional connection, replacing system files is the most economical. For small companies with more than a dozen computers, it is also very cost-effective to purchase a Winconnect Server XP software. If you configure a strong machine as a remote computer, the cost of purchasing Winconnect Server XP is definitely more cost-effective than the old computer in the upgrade unit ).
