American scientists have said they have invented a new technology that will soon allow the phone to be recharged for months rather than days. The electrical engineers at Illinois State University in the United States believe their new technology will make mobile phones and laptops run 100 times times longer than they are now. The current cell phone memory contains a thin wire, and every time the user accesses the data in the memory, it passes through the wires. It is these wires that consume most of the electricity. Electrical engineers believe that if the wire used to store and retrieve information becomes thinner and shorter, the amount of electricity it consumes will be reduced accordingly. Instead, they used carbon nanotubes to replace the wire, which is one out of 10,000 the diameter of human hair. The team's research paper, published in the journal Science, explains that "the energy consumption of a memory wire is actually proportional to its volume," says Xun Feng, the main author of the paper. By using carbon nanotubes, we can greatly reduce their energy consumption. Eric Poppe, a professor who leads the research program, believes the new technology will greatly improve the energy efficiency of mobile phones, allowing them to function as long as they get heat, kinetic energy, or solar energy.
