Mr. Hans Vestberg, President and CEO of Ericsson, the world's largest telecoms equipment maker, announced recently that Ericsson's global region had been Vestberg, transforming the original 23 market areas into 10 regions, and appointing Ericsson's two regional directors as members of the global Leadership team. The two major areas are North America and Greater China and East Asia, Ericsson's first two major markets. Olsson (Mats H Olsson), director of the Greater China and East Asia of Ericsson, expanded the scope of the leadership. Angel Rouize (Angel Ruiz) is now the head of Ericsson North America. Ericsson reported a 2009 net profit of SEK 3.7 billion, down 67% per cent year-on-year. Annual sales of SEK 208.9 billion, down 1% year-on-year. According to Ericsson's China rival Huawei's own performance, in 2009 Huawei achieved sales of more than 30 billion U.S. dollars, sales revenue of 21.5 billion U.S. dollars, respectively, growth of 28.8% and 26.5%. On the scale of sales revenue, Huawei is gradually narrowing the gap with Ericsson. Vestberg said that in the 2009, operators in central and Middle East and Africa were increasingly cautious about investing. However, in China, India and the United States, operators will continue to invest. Despite the poor environment, Ericsson is holding market share in all areas. 2010 will focus on ensuring stable profits and beyond market growth, while focusing on joint ventures such as Sony Ericsson. In the fourth quarter of last year, Ericsson completed a takeover of North America's CDMA and LTE operations, which contributed SEK 2.7 billion to double its sales in the North American market. However, Ericsson's joint ventures, including Chip company St-ericsson and Sony Ericsson, a mobile phone company, have lost money, making it less than SEK 1.46 billion. Sony Ericsson, in particular, sold 14.6 million handsets in the fourth quarter of last year, with a sharp drop in handset sales to 6.788 billion euros, down 40% from a year earlier, and 836 million euros in losses.
