Indonesia plays an increasingly important role in the smartphone market. Driven by this trend and the low cost of labor and new policies and other factors, many local and foreign brands of mobile phone manufacturers in Indonesia to build factories, opened the market for Indonesia to seize the curtain. In this paper, 12 mobile phone manufacturers who have built factories in Indonesia are counted.

Indonesia is one of the world's largest smartphone markets. EMarketer, a market research firm, believes that by 2018, Indonesia will be the world's fourth-largest smartphone market, with more than 100 million smartphone users active every month, and Indonesia overtaking other countries. Indonesia will also have an important strategic position in the brand-name smartphone manufacturing market.

In fact, this is happening, and other factors are also helping to accelerate the Indonesian occupation of the brand smartphone manufacturing market strategic position of the process. Indonesia's labor costs are relatively low, with the country's minimum annual wage of $1163 trillion, below China's $2472 trillion. In addition, the Indonesian Government is implementing a new policy, under which the cost of importing mobile phones increases, while the barriers to building a mobile phone factory are reduced.

The number will continue to grow in 2013, when Indonesia imports $2.6 billion worth of smartphones. The Indonesian government naturally hopes that some of this money will turn into domestic income.

International brands

1.Oppo

Chinese brand Oppo is actively entering the Indonesian market. The company has invested 30 million of dollars in the local acquisition of an old factory and converted it into an assembly plant. The factory is the first oppo outside China, located in Tangerang, adjacent to Jakarta, and will be fully operational by the middle of 2015.

Oppo's goal is for the Indonesian factory to assemble 500,000 smartphones a month.

2. Haier

Another Chinese brand, Haier, is widely known in mainland China for home appliances, but its market-oriented in Indonesia is smartphones. Haier is one of the manufacturers of local mobile phone brand Smartfren Andromax.

Haier has invested 1 million of dollars to expand production lines in its Indonesian plant. In the near future, the plant will be able to assemble 200,000 smartphones a month.

3. ZTE

ZTE, another Chinese manufacturer, offers a white-label smartphone for Indonesian brands. Its products include the Smartfren Andromax series and bolt power handsets.

ZTE boasts Indonesia as its biggest market. The company plans to invest heavily in building a smartphone factory near the Jakarta airport, but there was no further detailed planning at the earlier stage.

4. Samsung

Although the South Korean giant Samsung has repeatedly expressed its willingness to build factories in Indonesia, the plan has not yet been implemented. Samsung plans to start assembling smartphones in Indonesia this month, according to the latest news from the Indonesian industry representative. Samsung has brought in a mechanical and research team for Indonesia, the report said.

Samsung is said to be keen to produce up to 900,000 handsets a month in Indonesia, and in fact, once the plant is built, it plans to produce 100,000 handsets a month in the initial stages.

5.Axioo

Since October 2013, Axioo, a mobile phone brand from Singapore, has been operating in Cakung and Sunter areas in Jakarta. The company says it can produce up to 750,000 smartphones and Tablet PCs a year. Although the company uses parts made in China, all of the company's phones are assembled in Indonesia. Axioo says 30% of its phones are now made in Indonesia.

The company hopes to put more Indonesian-made parts on its handsets in the coming years.

6.Polytron

The local company mainly produces electronic products, such as radios, loudspeakers, LED televisions and refrigerators, which are famous in Indonesia. 2011, Polytron launched its own white-card function mobile phone, formally joined the mobile battlefield. At that time, although it already had three factories, the company still buys mobile phones from Chinese manufacturers.

Then, in December 2013, Polytron decided to produce its functional mobile phone in one of its own factories. Recently, it set a target, that is, it is located in the Central Java Kudus factory every month to produce 100,000 functional mobile phones and smartphones. Polytron's first domestically produced smartphone will be officially available this month.

7.Evercoss

The Evercoss plant, located in the city of San Fort in Central Java, was officially operational in June 2014. It employs 350 employees and can produce 1500 smartphones, 1500 Tablet PCs and 2,500 functional handsets a day. But not all evercoss are produced in Indonesia.

At present, Evercoss is building another factory in the nearby area. According to the plan, the plant will be able to produce smart phone components and hire another 2,500 employees.

In addition to Indonesia, the mobile phone brand plan is also issued in other Southeast Asian countries.

8.Advan

Advan has a well-established factory in the three-ridge port city, mainly producing LCD screens, laptops and personal computers. On the basis of an investment of 1 trillion rupees (80.7 million US dollars) to build 3000 square meters of factory, the company also invested 100 billion rupees (and 8.1 million dollars) to expand its smartphone and tablet production lines.

The company plans to assemble 25,000 smartphones and 25,000 Tablet PCs a month this year. It is expected that in the near future, the company will begin to produce more smartphone components.

Advan hopes that by 2016 it will be able to independently produce its own accessories without relying on Chinese manufacturers.

9.Mito

In August 2014, Mito's factory in Tangerang was officially put into use. The plant plans to assemble 100,000 smartphones and tablet PCs a month. Mito is currently assembling mobile phones in Indonesia and China.

Like Advan, Mito hopes to produce his smartphone components in the next few years.

10.Sat Nusapersada

The Sat Nusapersada said it would assemble all its handsets independently in Indonesia, while producing some components from its 3000-square-metre island factory, while other components were sourced from China.

The Sat Nusapersada plans to produce 100,000 label-free handsets a month, while providing manufacturing services to other mobile brands. One of the best-known is the bolt powerphone IVO V5, which boasts the first Indonesian 4G LTE smartphone assembled and manufactured domestically.

11.Himax

In the Indonesian equipment industry, Himax is an exciting new competitor because it aims to use powerful and affordable handsets to crack down on other brands, similar to millet. It is reported that the company is building a factory. By 2016, the 6-hectare factory in Tangerang plans to produce 100,000 smartphones a month.

Although SPC may be the least known local brand in the list, the company claims that its factory in Tangerang has been able to assemble 200,000 functional handsets a month. SPC has again invested 1 million of dollars in the plant, hoping to start assembling smartphones and tablets in 2015. But it is unclear how many handsets it plans to assemble each month.

In addition to the 12 companies, other smartphone makers have expressed some interest in building plants in Indonesia, such as Huawei, Asus, Lenovo, Millet and LG, according to a representative from the Ministry of Industry in Indonesia. But these companies have no action to substantiate their plans.

In addition, a much-anticipated major player in Indonesia is Foxconn, a Taiwanese manufacturer who has openly expressed its willingness to build large factories in Indonesia. Unfortunately nothing is immutable. As early as February 2014, Foxconn signed a letter of intent to invest 1 billion dollars in Indonesia over the next 3-5 years. But negotiations on the land agreement have reportedly broken down.
