Symantec will launch a consumer cloud backup storage service similar to the Mozy, carbonite and redeemed backup services.
According to Reuters, Symantec Cloud Division president Langbehn Chaffin said the company's consumer cloud storage will be operational starting from April 1.
Norton 360 users currently have 2GB capacity online storage, and their data can be automatically backed up to the cloud (for example, a Symantec data center). Users can also pay more for higher capacity. Symantec's new service will have its own pricing model and will be mozy, unlike EMC's Carbonite services. Symantec has not yet disclosed specifics on branding, pricing and setup. The annual fee for Mozy unlimited storage services is approximately USD 60, while the Carbonite annual fee is $50.
Sparebackup also provides its own cloud services, but is licensed by OEMs (OEM), such as Carphonewarehouse, which resell the Sparebackup service to their customers.
Symantec's new services will be customer-centric storage services and independent of online backup services for the enterprise.
It is reported that Symantec's online storage service will adopt SwapDrive technology, which was acquired by Symantec last June. The cost of Symantec's acquisition of SwapDrive is 123 million dollars. EMC's acquisition of Mozy service vendors contributed to Symantec's acquisition of SwapDrive. While Symantec's online storage service started late, the consumer PCs that use the Norton 360 Online backup service are six times times more than Carbonite and Mozy.
Storage Solutions The Symantec of origin is better integrated into the trend of cloud computing, and explicitly put forward its own cloud backup storage service direction for consumers. Even with Norton 360 's consumer PCs reaching six times times mozy and Carbonite, I'm still less bullish on Symantec's cloud-storage initiative.
First, how many users will accept the concept of cloud storage? Symantec has the advantage of having a large number of online storage users, but from online storage to cloud storage, people need to face an acceptance problem. At the same time, Symantec's cloud storage services will have their own pricing alone, which will be acceptable to individual consumers? In addition, Symantec is safe, but is the security of Symantec equally trustworthy in the area of cloud storage?
Norton 360 's online backup business is so large because it has a significant portion of it being brought by antivirus software. While Norton 360 claims to be able to expand the capacity of the original 2GB if the consumer wants it, how many users are expanding it? If cloud storage is implemented, what is the way in which cloud storage will be promoted?
The so-called cloud storage, is not a simple storage, because in addition to storage, the cloud data processing, computing and integration concepts also can not be ignored, cloud concept integration of the original hardware and software functions, nearly all IT equipment to the Web page. It remains to be seen how well the Symantec has behaved in this regard at the end of last year.
