Security researchers say an old version of the Android system found a vulnerability that could allow attackers to execute malicious code on an end-user smartphone. Vulnerabilities exist on a widely used application interface WebView, where developers can use the interface to embed Web content in applications. The researchers found that most programs using the interface did not download Web content correctly using secure links.

As a result, attackers can use open WiFi sites, hijack connections, and inject malicious JavaScript code into Android apps. This vulnerability primarily affects the Android 4.2 system, and Android 4.2 adds new security features that limit the way the script object is invoked.
