According to the latest news, IBM successful use of carbon nanomaterials, on a single chip integration of tens of thousands of 9nm process technology transistor, I believe that everyone to the famous Moore's law are inkling, but with the size of integrated circuit transistors are becoming smaller, CPU memory and other chips are bound to be some discrepancy with Moore's law. To continue to develop in accordance with Moore's law, the search for new materials has become a necessity, carbon nano-material is one of them, and the other three-dimensional chip is also a way to save Moore's Law, Samsung, IBM, Intel and so on are committed to 3D chip research.

IBM shows carbon nano-wafers

In the law of the number of transistors in integrated circuits, the industry has a well-known Moore's law. Moore's law states that when prices are constant, the number of transistors that can be accommodated on an integrated circuit increases by one times every 18 months, and the performance is increased by one fold. The law, proposed by Moore, one of Intel's founders, has been consistent with chip development over the years.

Silicon Crystal

At present, the process technology of silicon transistor has reached the level of 32nm, 20nm, and with the increasingly fierce competition in the chip field, the size of the transistor is getting smaller. For example, the more well-known wafer generation plant globalfoundries, as well as TSMC, Tsu Power are added to the next generation of 16nm process wafer development. However, with the increasing density of transistors on integrated circuits, it becomes more and more difficult to increase the density. Moore's law is bound to bring the transistor's size to a physical limit.

Intel Transistor Development Program

It has been reported that the commonly used silicon transistors at this stage have a 10nm physical limit in size. The silicon transistor process has now advanced to 22nm,14nm, but according to Intel's 2011 technical data, the CPU for its 10nm process waits until 2015. And the 10nm is also close to the physical limit of the silicon transistor. In contrast, if Moore's law continues to work, carbon nanomaterials are more likely to increase the density of transistors to save Moore's law.
