This is a crazy idea: in 2010, Lei founded the Millet mobile phone company (Xiaomi), which challenged the lucrative high-end handset suppliers in China directly to Apple, Samsung and Lenovo. In front of these giants, millet not only held up their positions, but also achieved a burst of growth. Last year, Millet mobile phone sales of more than 5 billion U.S. dollars, growth rate reached 150%, the company's valuation is now up to 10 billion U.S. dollars. Lei, 44, said that the success of the millet phone, based on Google's Android system, depended largely on close interaction with customers. Earlier this year, the Millet mobile phone entered Singapore; It is expected that soon, the millet mobile phone will also enter India and Malaysia. As the company began to expand in Asia, Lei received an interview with Fortune magazine Fortune about why he thought the millet phone could be transformed in other markets as well.
Which countries will be your new market? How did you choose these countries?
Lei: Our initial plans include 10 countries in Asia, Europe and Latin America. These countries meet three conditions: the smartphone market is about to arrive at a critical point, social networking services are highly sophisticated and have a good e-commerce infrastructure. Based on these conditions, we chose Russia, Turkey, Brazil, Mexico and India as the next leg of expansion.
Other Chinese smartphone makers, particularly Lenovo, have exported a successful marketing model, selling high-quality Low-cost handsets in other developing markets, and have established brand awareness and their own retail networks. How are you going to compete with them?
In a sense, we are working with them to build the reputation of Chinese brands. The difference between us is that we will copy Millet's own sales model to other markets. We treat users as friends, let them help us improve, and we follow a strategy that pursues excellence on only 7-8 of products.
Fierce competition in the smartphone sector seems to have led to a fall in profits. How do you plan to make enough profit to make the company worthy of a 10 billion dollar valuation?
Millet Company is most famous is its business model, we can put the cost to go. We also have the world's top operating efficiency. In addition, we can get profit from our own hardware platform (software and services).
How did you expand the Android ecosystem?
We have made a lot of innovations, such as our local Wi-Fi one-click access function. This feature is very popular. In addition, we also have harassment phone automatic interception function.
You mentioned that one of the goals of the company is to become Fortune 500 companies. Why do you set such a goal? Have you set a timetable for achieving this goal?
Some people say that millet company is a night of fame, so there will be no long-term development. I hope that millet will soon become a Fortune 500 company, showing that our business model and rapid development are sustainable.
What do you think of Fortune magazine's "2013 business figures" Ellon Mouske?
He is a remarkable man both in his creativity and in his executive power. I think Tesla (Tesla) car is very good, I also bought two cars, one in the United States, one in China. The Chinese car is still on the road.
