Platform battle: Cloud Foundry can occupy PaaS?

Enterprise PaaS provider Cloud Foundry was officially released from Pivotal in late February and Cloud Foundry will continue to evolve through the Cloud Foundry Foundation to create open source platform-as-a-service (PaaS) products, including the OpenShift platform for OpenStack and Red Hat Developed product. Cloud Foundry has been licensed as an open source Apache 2.0, which means that Cloud Foundry will grow more orderly.

Cloud Foundry has been very popular recently, running on OpenStack. In fact, some other PaaS systems are also running on OpenStack. For example, IBM's BlueMix PaaS solution is based on Cloud Foundry, and Cloud Foundry itself runs on OpenStack.

Now that the key backers behind OpenStack, such as IBM, HP and Rackspace, have joined the CF Foundation, does not this mean that the OpenStack community is content with IaaS alone? - Interestingly, Rackspace recently announced its own open source PaaS project Solum.

Some people think that the development of the Cloud Foundry Foundation is like a death knell for those trying to create an OpenStack PaaS. Solum, the OpenStack PaaS project, is central to this debate. The Solum project was introduced by Rackspace, but even now that Rackspace has joined the Cloud Foundry Foundation, many customers may think that even Rackspace itself supports Cloud Foundry and its Solum project will not be scrapped?

John Igoe, vice president of Rackspace, believes that there are now two types of service layers that are popular with our customers, depending on whether you are PaaS-centric or IaaS-centric. PaaS-centric customers may favor Cloud Foundry's cross-cloud portability, while IaaS-centric customers may value Solum's ability to leverage existing infrastructure.

Interestingly enough, in the midst of a cloud of high-profile support for Cloud Foundry by many vendors, the fate of Solum is crucial to Red Hat without RedHat. Red Hat has been marketing its PaaS offering, OpenShift, which it hopes will migrate OpenShift to OpenStack with Solum With that in mind, Red Hat is a staunch supporter of OpenStack, so it's no surprise that this time out of the Cloud Foundry Foundation.

Piston's Josh McKenty advises Red Hat to completely shut down OpenShift to Cloud Foundry. Observers believe that the Cloud Foundry Foundation poses a threat to it. As Red Hat's OpenShift is not yet supported by any consortium, some even speculate that RedHat will eventually give up OpenShift to Cloud Foundry. So compared to open source competitor OpenShift, Cloud Foundry is undoubtedly the winner of the PaaS project at this stage.

But all the business around the PaaS platform dispute, ultimately, are driven by commercial interests, OpenStack's PaaS project Solum will not be stalled because of the stripping of CloudFoundry, RedHat's Openshift project will not be abandoned until the barren, on the contrary, They will also continue to move forward. The competition in the PaaS market will become even more intense and diverse. In this competition, the only player who decides to win is the product that truly impresses the customer.
