Senior vice president of EMC Ye Chenghui: Let "big Data" run on the "cloud" side

Reporter: The development of cloud computing is now a consensus, as industry experts, how do you see the development trend of cloud computing industry? What are the obstacles that are being encountered? How to break through?

Ye Chenghui: Cloud computing and large data are the two major trends that accompany the present. In the cloud, the enterprise's IT environment is growing, it system management and maintenance more and more complex, enterprise IT investment more than 70% of the IT system itself for the management and maintenance, only less than 30% of the investment in the business development. Cloud computing technology can realize the automation management and configuration of IT resources, reduce the complexity of IT management and improve the efficiency of resource utilization. For IT companies, the business model needs to be transformed by the characteristics of cloud computing technology to provide IT technology in a service way. For non-IT companies, cloud computing technology needs to be deployed to operate it in a service manner.

For companies, the main form of cloud computing is the private cloud, whose main business is supported by private clouds, rather than the critical business or abrupt business that can take on public cloud resources. Private clouds and public clouds need to be seamlessly connected to form a mixed cloud environment. But in the Chinese market, the use of private cloud is more common due to the different usage and management style. Enterprises from the traditional IT environment to the private cloud, the first to integrate computing resources into a unified pool of resources, which requires the use of virtualization software technology. At present, many enterprises are doing this step. Virtualization is a step-by-step implementation, typically starting with a non-critical business, migrating part of the business to a virtualized environment, and then gradually migrating more and more businesses to the virtualized environment, so that a private cloud's environment is formed. And the next step is to seamlessly dock private clouds with the public cloud, which is a critical issue.

Large data is another important current trend. "Big Data" is a typical application running in the cloud. There is no uniform definition of "big data". It is generally believed that it is a mass of unstructured data, characterized by a large number of data, the form of data diversification. How do you store these fast-growing, massive user data? How to analyze and deal with these data, and excavate the value? Are the great challenges faced by enterprises. Only with the use of cloud computing, large data management and other emerging technologies to deal with.

Reporter: What are the advantages of EMC as a leading manufacturer in cloud computing? How is this advantage built and maintained?

Ye Chenghui: First of all, it is important to grasp the trend. For cloud computing and large data trends, our company has a clear understanding, and constantly strengthen the two areas of research and development input, to ensure that the formation of solutions in the industry leader in the development of virtual data Center for high-end storage System Vmax, Vplex, a common cloud-oriented storage system Atmos for private cloud data centers. Second, the continuous acquisition of industry-leading enterprises, thereby forming an exogenous advantage. In terms of cloud computing, the acquisition of VMware, the virtual software maker, which was recognized as the most successful acquisition in the IT World in 2003, was an absolute leading position in the cloud computing operating system, with a market capitalisation of more than $40 billion trillion. In terms of large data, Greenplum and Isilon two companies were acquired in 2010, which are the leading technology companies for large data analysis and large data storage.

Reporter: In the second quarter, EMC Company's global revenue and profit have created a new record, including how much of its business in China? What opportunities are EMC companies taking in the rapidly growing Chinese market?

Ye Chenghui: Just released the second quarter earnings show, the company's quarterly comprehensive income again high, to 4.85 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 20%, net profit reached 793 million U.S. dollars, the year-on-year growth of 33%. In addition, there are 9.5 billion of dollars in cash and investment, which can be seen, the company's development momentum is very strong. In the second quarter, EMC Asia-Pacific market revenue grew 34% per cent over the global average, and Greater China was one of EMC's 6 largest markets in the Asia-Pacific market. At present, there are many opportunities in the Chinese market, and opportunities are reserved for those who are prepared. 5 years ago, when I joined EMC, I set a five-year plan to lay ahead in terms of technical teams, partner development, market branding, etc. The results of each step are now the result of a period of hard work in the past. For example, the business market was set up 5 years ago, and the company's revenues in the commercial market have almost kept growing at 50% a year.

Reporter: What is EMC's development plan for the Chinese market in the next phase? How to deepen cooperation with local manufacturers?

Ye Chenghui: At EMC for five years, I have learned that it is necessary to constantly persuade the headquarters to increase investment in China, there is input to reap. At the same time, in the era of cloud computing, EMC needs to strengthen its collaboration with local vendors. EMC's collaboration with China's electronic information industry group is an example of EMC's deepening collaboration with local vendors. On May 19 this year, EMC, together with VMware, announced a tripartite strategic cooperation agreement with the China Electronic Information Industry group. The tripartite cooperation will include content based on the China Electronic Information Industry Group's server technology, EMC's information management, storage, security technology, VMware's cloud infrastructure and management technology. The three parties will integrate the advantages of strength, to reach a more extensive and in-depth cooperation, and jointly expand the "cloud computing", "Big data" areas, committed to a new generation of information technology innovation and development. EMC is also willing to invest more in China. 5 years ago, EMC set up its first research and development center in China, and in April this year, it set up its third research and development center in Chengdu. I hope EMC is becoming "China's EMC" in China.
