Telecom and mobile, who needs volte?

Last Thursday, there was an article on the internet calling on China Telecom to give up the CDMA network quickly. Because Qualcomm charges high CDMA royalties plus China Telecom is testing volte, the author of the article concluded that telecommunications should quickly give up the CDMA network, put all the hope on the deployment of VoLTE. Unfortunately, this article has a lot of common sense mistakes, so it is necessary to analyze, straight.

CSBF better than Svlte/srlte?

The author wrote in this article: "The coexistence of CDMA and LTE technology, telecom 4G mobile phone is svlte or Srlte technology, the former for the single three to double-pass mobile phone, the latter for the single three to single phone, can not do CSFB single standby, call down. Therefore, the limitation of CDMA technology has become the biggest obstacle of telecom development. ”

The first mistake the author made was to assume that CSFB was superior to Svlte/srlte (dual standby). We know that the common speech scheme of 4G mobile phone has two kinds of CSFB and dual standby scheme. And the so-called CSFB, the most important feature is the voice and data double net single stay. To give a simple example, if someone in the 4G Internet access to a phone, then support CSFB mobile phone will interrupt the 4G network connection, switch to 2G/3G network for the phone. In the entire call process, CSFB mobile phone can not use the 4G network. And svlte/srlte through the double net to wait for the way, the telephone and the handset surfer is relatively independent, does not interrupt the 4G Internet because of the voice call.

It is not difficult to see, simply think CSFB is better than Svlte/srlte is not correct. Generally speaking, although this technology can reduce the terminal cost and power consumption, but there are network switching Shiyan (early port version of the iphone5s in the use of mobile 4G network even need more than 1 minutes of switching time delay), the data voice can not be used at the same time the disadvantage of CSFB. While Svlte/srlte can be dual-network, but the terminal cost is relatively high, the power consumption is also relatively large. With the development of chip technology these years, the manufacturing cost of Svlte/srlte terminal is also decreasing, and the power consumption of mobile phone is declining. Currently marketed IPHONE6/6 Plus has been able to support both CSFB and Srlte in two ways, with no significant difference in cost and power consumption. It can be said that the two technologies have their pros and cons, and there is no better question.

Telecom and mobile, who needs volte?

The author writes in the article: "Currently because of the 4G Fdd-lte photography has not yet been released, is basically a mobile monologue, mobile internal testing volte, the more strange is that telecommunications some time ago claimed to test volte technology, but in its current mobile phone demand does not propose such testing requirements. ”

With only LTE licences, Mobile has monopolized more than 90% of the 4G share. Because of this, mobile test volte is a very normal thing. As a competitor, Telecom is subject to the license plate and not many 4G users, testing volte instead become "a very strange thing." So who needs volte technology for telecoms and mobile?

To answer this question, we must first look at the different issues facing mobile and telecommunications. For the mobile, because the 4G terminal uses the CSFB technology, the switching delay between the LTE and the GSM network is always the pain in the mobile heart. Moreover, TD-SCDMA's numerous problems have become the catalysts for mobile deployment volte. Although TD-SCDMA can also carry voice business, but because of TD-SCDMA there are many problems, a large number of mobile users call the phone is still using the GSM network. The massive use of 700 million mobile users has brought tremendous pressure to this 2G network, and mobile desperately needs a technology to shunt the GSM pressure. In order to solve these problems completely, the movement put the hope on the volte. By deploying volte, mobile can reduce the utilization of GSM network and reduce the maintenance cost of the network. On the other hand, it can solve the problem that the CSFB switch is too large, and improve the user's experience.

For telecommunications, getting rid of Qualcomm's control is the key to promoting volte research. In fact, the first operator to push VoLTE is the CDMA operator Verizon. As America's largest operator, Verizon began studying volte from the early 4G deployment in an effort to get rid of Qualcomm's influence. Today, Verizon has deployed a VoLTE test network in several parts of the United States and is preparing for large-scale commercial business in 2015. It is believed that China Telecom will soon deploy VoLTE with the release of Fdd-lte licence, thus reducing the influence of Qualcomm.

Telecom short time to give up cdma/evdo reliable?

The authors write in the article: "If telecommunications adopt a radical approach, the deployment of volte technology in a short time network, the total abandonment of the CDMA/EVDO network, will be the most favorable development trend." ”

There is no doubt that the author's view is completely wrong. Although VoLTE is the next direction of 4G development, this technology is not mature at present. Whether it is deploying the most aggressive Verizon in 4G, or the China movement, which occupies a domestic 90%4g share, is only volte tested in a number of places, and large-scale business will have to wait at least a year. Not only that, the Ministry of LTE only issued a license plate, FDD-LTE license plate is far from the future. If telecommunications really as the author said a short time to completely give up the CDMA/EVDO network, put the hope on the immature volte, then waiting for telecommunications must be the end of the collapse. The so-called "get the most favorable development posture" is unrealistic, and ultimately hurt the interests of hundreds of millions of consumers.

When will telecom give up the CDMA network?

The author at the end of the article put forward such a view: "On the network, the establishment of 4G network is inevitable, the existence of CDMA network will not give the entire mobile network to increase the number of capacity, but also occupy a valuable low-frequency resources, in the wide range of 4G more advantages." On the handset side, if the cdma,4g handset is not supported is even cheaper than the 3G handset, moreover the quantity and the kind choice is more. So telecommunications to give up CDMA network is necessarily the faster the better. ”

In the previous analysis, we already know that telecommunications in the current situation is not possible to give up the CDMA network, and the so-called "wide-area coverage of 4G more advantage" is nonsense (coverage and spectrum-related, and format-independent). With the issuance of FDD-LTE license plate and the maturity of volte, CDMA will inevitably go to the end of history. So when it comes to telecoms, when is it appropriate to shut down the CDMA network? According to Verizon, America's largest operator, the operator has been deploying Fdd-lte networks since 2010, while announcing the closure of the CDMA network in 2021. As a reference, China Telecom may consider shutting down the CDMA network 11 years after the Fdd-lte license is officially issued. Of course, with the full expiration of CDMA patents, CDMA network should not be closed.
