Cloud computing is a transparent resource delivery and usage model that provides users with the resources they need through the network on an as-needed and scalable basis. Depending on the resources provided, cloud computing services can be divided into infrastructure services (IaaS), Platform Services (PaaS), and software Services (SaaS). Cloud computing can also be divided into private cloud and shared cloud, depending on the object of service and the purpose of building the cloud.
Today, the Amazon-represented IaaS services and cloud computing SaaS services represented by Salesforce have been successful in stages. Amazon's AWS business has earned more than $120 million trillion in revenues, while Salesforce's revenue has exceeded $1 billion trillion.
Currently, 70% of companies use server virtualization to reduce costs, according to Antonio Piraino, Tier1 research manager. More than 10% of companies are currently using or planning to use cloud computing. To take advantage of the new opportunities offered by cloud computing, IT organizations must understand the difference between server virtualization and various types of cloud computing, and understand the risks that can arise from the use of each execution environment from the characteristics of various applications.
What is cloud computing?
One might wonder why server virtualization has been interested in cloud computing as it has dramatically reduced costs by reducing the number of physical servers that businesses buy. However, this is not the same thing at all.
Different cloud computing options available
There are two basic types of cloud computing: public cloud computing and private cloud computing. The types of cloud computing can generally be distinguished by their location (within and outside the enterprise) and the degree of security provided.
Public cloud Computing is a cloud provider that provides users with server, storage, network, and application resources on the Internet. By definition, public cloud computing is outside the enterprise.
There are two forms of private cloud computing: internal cloud computing and external cloud computing. Internal cloud computing provides IT managers with full control over available resources in your data center.
External private cloud computing combines the characteristics of internal cloud computing and public cloud computing. They are the same as public cloud computing because they are outside the enterprise. But unlike public cloud computing, where applications run on dedicated servers, cloud providers build a container wall around external private cloud computing, making it safer than public cloud computing. For resources in private cloud computing, IT managers have greater control over public cloud computing. Amazon's virtual Private cloud computing is an example of an external private cloud computing.
Security plays an important role
Critical applications with high availability and compliance or regulatory requirements are not suitable for public cloud computing or external private cloud computing because of the problem of resource control and the geographic location of data. Applications that require high levels of security should run within the enterprise Environment-server virtualization or internal cloud computing. It is only possible to run in an external dedicated cloud computing when the cloud provider shows the level of security needed.
"It's important to create a cloud definition for your organization," says David Escalante, the IT security manager at Boston University.
Currently, most of the most commonly used cloud computing includes the development and testing of new applications, disaster recovery, and the running of traffic-heavy web applications. Other applications include collecting network survey data and storing and processing the data in cloud computing.
Boston University has outsourced some of its research work to external cloud computing providers with research operations, says Escalante of Boston University. He defines this type of outsourcing as cloud computing.
Kaspersky Lab Senior product manager Peter Beardmore is using cloud computing to analyze a large amount of data collected from the company's customers to get the latest threats and malware trends.
Cloud computing, as a disruptive innovation, has brought new operational and business models to the traditional IDC industry and software service industries. By dramatically increasing the utilization rate of servers, the cost effect on a scale not only attracts the attention of large enterprises, but also provides small and medium-sized enterprises and individual users with Low-cost high-performance computing, server leasing, computing and storage business and development environment services. In the financial crisis, the price advantage of cloud computing is further highlighted.
Prior to 2010, China Telecom operators in the traditional IDC business and IDC value-added services on the cloud is not very cold, which is the current telecom operators in the large group of customers in the monopoly of the IDC business. Because China Mobile currently has a certain gap in backbone and metropolitan area Network and IDC resources compared with telecom and unicom, such as the century interconnection and other IDC service providers in the competition of large group customers can not be compared with the telecom operators, coupled with the overall situation of the North-south demarcation of Telecom Unicom, Due to the lack of competitive pressure of telecom and Unicom in the IDC business of large group customers, the telecom operators lack the power to move the IDC business to the cloud with the steady development of IDC market.
