VMware has captured the server virtualization market so far and is now eyeing the cloud computing market. It is understood that VMware's software-defined data center (SDDC) technology will slowly develop into a hybrid cloud, the delivery of IT as a service. Now that the cloud market is dominated by public cloud cousins like Amazon, Google and Microsoft, could VMware's strategy help divide the cloud market?

At this year's VMware Forum, Joe Baguley, chief technology officer for VMware Europe, Middle East and Africa, introduced an exciting set of figures: In 2012, VMware customers saved $ 10 billion in server virtualization alone. If these customers automate and virtualize the entire data center, the total cost savings will increase at least sixfold to $ 70 billion.

VMware believes that the future of enterprise IT lies in providing everything as a service, and software-defined data centers are the first steps. The software-defined data center virtualizes and automates the entire infrastructure, not just servers, but storage and networking products, and then software management. In the view of VMware, which is also the essence of the private cloud architecture, organizations can then move some of their workloads to the public cloud, enabling a hybrid cloud infrastructure that moves applications and workloads back and forth freely and efficiently.

VMware's openness

Fundamentally speaking, VMware uses a method from the inside out, we can see that in the cloud era, in order to survive and seek development, VMware made a huge change. VMware is now more open to other technology and service providers such as OpenStack, the open-source cloud platform; VMware's vCloud suite supports the installation of all private clouds and the public cloud on the market today; and its hypervisor management suite is also beginning to support the vSphere platform Outside of the hypervisor.

Perhaps VMware has realized that in the age of cloud computing, it is not possible to ignore other technologies as it did during the virtualization era, so it has begun to support other vendors and technologies in its own tools, or else VMware is going to be the second Oracle . IT silos have been proposed for many years and have always existed. Amazon Web Services is an isolated island, and Windows is an isolated island. VMware knows that creating an island infrastructure for enterprise infrastructure without supporting other server virtualization platforms.

However, this open change makes people feel less practical, VMware became a member of OpenStack because of the acquisition of network provider Nicira, Nicira is an OpenStack member. We'll wait and see if VMware is truly a Platinum Sponsor for OpenStack.

VMware's SDDC Strategy

VMware now offers its customers the option of SDDC, which allows customers to gradually virtualize part of their infrastructure, such as storage and networking, to the evolution of the data center using traditional methods, or to purchase a vCloud suite license, which includes All of the SDDC components are able to over-reach the hybrid cloud.

In order to prove the effectiveness of SDDC strategy, VMware also made some statistics. In 2012, VMware revenue increased 22% to $ 46.1 billion, although virtualization was the most profitable source of revenue, but the cloud department generated more revenue than other departments.

Gartner predicts that by 2016, 45% of cloud users will use a hybrid cloud. In March, VMware chief executive Pat Gelsinger announced that it will release a hybrid cloud service later this year that will allow VMware's 4.80 million customers to monetize the public cloud without changing existing applications, and VMware A hybrid cloud service was formed.

On May 21, 2013, Gelsinger is expected to show us even better cloud services. VMware's new cloud business may offer separate public cloud offerings so VMware can compete with infrastructure-as-a-service providers, such as Amazon.

There is no doubt that VMware is definitely a place in the cloud computing market, but it is undeniable that it is a new entrant, catching up with other vendors and giving SDDC's new strategy more details.
