Gdc2011:jenova Chen, John Romero and Jason Rohrer play a theme: Designing a work that is both a game and a religion. Contestant: This competition is hosted by Eric Zimmerman, the defending champion Jenova Chen ("Thatgamecompany" from a well-known independent gaming company, a company founded by the Chinese who has been renowned for its unique artistic style, such as the PSN Game "Flower" Accept the challenge from John Romero (main works Doom, Daikatana) and Jason Rohrer (main works passage, Inside a star-filled Sky). The theme of this year's Game Design Challenge (Game designs Challenge) is about the rapid rise of social gaming. But as social networks become more and more integrated into the game, this year's goal has been to elevate the topic to "the oldest form of social network"-religion. The challenge for Chen, Romero and Rohrer, is to devise something that is a game and religion in some way. The three developers have 2 months to study the problem, and now it's time for the three of them to come to the scene and present their design results. One can only play once and let the player become part of the game Rohrer from the introduction of their own design, "Chain of the World" (Chain) began. He first talked about his grandfather, who was the first mayor of Ohio Fairlawn, and the town of 77th, which was almost two decades ago, was built by the city. Rohrer about his grandfather's influence on the world: After his grandfather's tireless efforts, the government eventually failed to cut the fairlawn into two halves, bypassing the town with the interstate. The incident still affects American drivers. Rohrer through the Minecraft of this game masterpiece to express his creative design inspiration. A few more minutes on the road was not the only "gift" his grandfather had left behind, Rohrer also mentioned the house his grandfather built, and his grandfather's logo for the town. He said he had also given his grandfather his valuable advice as a gift to his friends, though he was not sure that it was his grandfather's words, for perhaps it was a family motto. "My grandfather has become his idea, not himself, because the details have gone with him," he said. Rohrer said he had essentially deified his grandfather and raised a question: What difference does such an idealized character have with God? He believes that some historical figures are the same, people always want to travel long distances to see the people who are deified,Like a pilgrimage. Rohrer says people love to go to Jackson Pollack's studio, just to pay tribute to the artist's old shoes, and travel to the famous Stonehenge. Rohrer believes that his game should have that myth, so that players in the game to leave some evidence of their existence, as their existence is also changing the real world. The way he wants to do this is to make a game that only one person can enter at a time, and then turn it over to the next player who succeeds him. He felt that if the player changed the game world, it will enable future players to personally experience the changes he has made to the world, as his grandfather has done for the interstate 77th, which is affecting people today, and that has created a very interesting dynamic pattern. Subsequently, Rohrer began to introduce his own "chain of the world", in fact, this is a masterpiece of independent game "My World" (Minecraft) based mod. This mod has only one copy in the world, and now there is a U disk in Rohrer's hand. Players just enter the game in the game world after death, the game will be changed to save the world after the copy back to the U disk. The player then hands the USB drive to the next interested player. [Page] The first time in the game to die so unhappy but there are rules. Each player cannot communicate the contents of the game to others. The player's initial knowledge of the game must be based on the experience of the game. In addition, there is no sign of text information left in the game. The player can kill himself in the game, Rohrer said that there is even a lava pit in the world, next to the player's birth point, so that the player will end up on his own. Rohrer said he was the first person to experience the game: "My death in this game was very upsetting to me, the most unpleasant death of my life's gaming experience, and death too quickly." Rohrer complained. The reason why he is so unhappy is that he has not had time to do any follow-up players can find the change is dead, but dead is dead, that is life. He then handed the U-disk to an audience and let him enter the game as a second player. The independent game of a disciple on Twitter was introduced to Romero to introduce his design. He implemented his design with a Twitter account called "@Messiah6502" (Messiah 6502, seemingly @god6502 's son). Romero says the Messiah needs followers (Follower, the Twitter audience) and tells people to follow them as soon as possible. He reported his first 12 listeners (the 12 disciples of Jesus) and asked them to come to the front of the meeting. Each of the disciples was given a colorful note that they were asked to sign as many of them as possible within 2 minutes to join the believers.Ranks. Romero's design is based on a savior-style Twitter. 2 minutes later the disciples returned. Romero says there are some sticky notes with star patterns that symbolize the miracles of Messiah creation. He asked the stars to gather in front of the room so that 12 of the disciples could count the people who had obtained the miracles. Those who get the most miracles will become disciples. Finally, the winner appeared and was asked to kill John Romero and replace him as the new religious leader, and Romero's demo ended. Atheist's religious game challenge Chen is the next designer. He said he found the challenge difficult for him because "I am an atheist from China". He is ready to take the opportunity of this speech to test his faith. Chen's definition of religion is "the core values summed up by a series of practices, the time and environment based dogma that creates happiness". Jenova Chen used the challenge to test his religious beliefs. As a designer, he wants to simplify everything. He mentioned the relationship between money and happiness. Money can increase happiness until some limit, but when the limit is crossed, it will not satisfy the happiness. Money is not a goal, Chen says. He told the story of a "heroic journey" in which the hero brought back something to his people. But if a hero's triumph would only benefit him, it would be far from enough. The goal, Chen said, must be the most original, heartfelt. All life forms have its purpose, and at the most fundamental level, that purpose is the need for birth, growth, reproduction and death. He thinks that reproduction is the most interesting part of the life cycle, so we want to design a game based on this. But because making people is a chore that takes time, it's much simpler to breed "creativity". Chen says his games will be among those who spread their ideas, with only the best and most receptive ideas to survive. The question is how to do it, who will do it, and why. This is the use of God. He said that there had been a group of admiring his beliefs in action, it was a nonprofit technology, entertainment, and Design group that held a series of meetings to gather "the best thinkers and practitioners in the world" and condense their most powerful ideas into a 18-minute speech. But they are not game designers. Chen made a comment on the group's website and said it would use a motto to make it more active: "Use your ideas to influence the world." He found no feedback from the group's videos, and those people should have a personal page like Twitter, but the difference is that "listeners" become "people you influence." To do a game that can be run, it needs a feedback loop. Just having a bunch of listeners is not enough. Need aA feedback loop like Diablo: Killing Monsters, gaining experience and money, and motivating players to try harder to kill monsters. Chen finally said he would call the game "reproduction". The winner of the challenge was chosen by the audience, and obviously Rohrer was already a shoo-in. Rohrer has three rewards to choose from: The Bible, the Book of Mormon or the Journal of Mental Health. Rohrer chose the third, he said, because the Book of Mormon is free. (Edit/zz)
