Lenovo is considering moving some of its personal computer (PC) production operations from China and elsewhere to Japan, Yomiuri Duijl, Milko Van Duijl, a senior vice president of Lenovo Group, quoted by the Yomiuri Shimbun. Lenovo has established a joint venture with NEC in Japan and has already done some production work in Shanxing County's factory, according to the report. The joint venture may be in Shanxing County's factory, for Lenovo's Japanese market to produce all of its products.
This January, Lenovo announced the acquisition of NEC, which was officially completed on July 1. In the deal, Lenovo will set up a joint venture with NEC, with Lenovo accounting for 51% of the joint venture, and NEC holding 49% per cent of the company. Lenovo also issued 28.11 million common shares to NEC, worth HK $1.36 billion (about 175 million US dollars).
Lenovo's CEO, Yang, said at the time that he hoped to set up a joint venture to help Lenovo's market share in Japan reach 26%.
