Sina Science and technology news Beijing time, June 28, the United States Supreme Court on June 27, on the basis of violations of freedom of expression, dismissed a California ban on the sale or rental of violent video games to minors laws. This is the first time the US Supreme Court has ruled on video game cases. California introduced the Law on video games in 2005, but it was never implemented. The Act defines a game of violence as "killing, injuring, or sexual abuse of human images". Retailers who sell or rent violent video games to minors can be fined a maximum of 1000 dollars. The law has been opposed by game publishers, distributors and sellers, including the American Federation of Entertainment Software (Entertainment Software Association,esa). Members of the American Entertainment Software consortium include the Disney Interactive Studios (Disney Interactive UBM), the art (Electronic Arts), Microsoft and Sony Computer Entertainment USA (Sony Computer Entertainment America). The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the verdict by 7 votes in favour and 2 against the law. In addition, six other states introduced similar laws, but were dismissed.
