Interview with OpenStack Foundation chairman Alan Clark:openstack latest Progress

Journalist: What kind of role does the OpenStack Foundation play in the whole open source market at present?

The Alan Clark:openstack Foundation is a neutral foundation and plays a very important role in open source. Long before OpenStack, the open source domain was Rackspace, and realised that if open source was controlled by a single company or individual, it would not be efficient. So set up the OpenStack Foundation, the foundation is a very neutral organization, within the organization, no enterprise can control the development of open source. So a foundation like OpenStack, because it is very neutral, can encourage engineers to innovate better.

In addition, the OpenStack Foundation can provide the necessary measures to get the entire open source community to succeed. Perhaps none of this is very concerned, but it is also necessary for the development of the open source community, such as providing space for the community, source code, management personnel, and people who are responsible for the exchange. The Foundation is also responsible for organizing activities to protect the interests of the community as a whole.

Reporter: From your last visit to China, China's cloud computing and open source market changes?

Alan Clark: In fact, the change is very big, I think the biggest change is China's understanding of open source, at the same time, Chinese engineers on open source acceptance and usage is also increasing, engineers in the OpenStack community's ability has also been greatly improved. Before, I think it may be more language and culture barriers, but now it seems that the Chinese engineers to overcome these obstacles, but also actively participate in community activities, but also to promote the development of these communities. We can see that the development of technology is very very fast, the software definition, the network SDN and the telecommunication AFN technology have greatly developed in this year.

Reporter: In the OpenStack community there are some user feedback, large-scale deployment under the distributed routing mechanism is not perfect, in the next version of the community will have to upgrade the network, whether there are relevant plans to disclose in the future?

Alan Clark: It's true that you're talking about one of the problems that we're facing, and you know, when it comes to open source, a lot of things are always in the process of changing, like extensibility, which is something we've always been very concerned about. Because our deployments are growing larger, we need to address extensibility issues. As our community recognizes this and solves the problem of distribution mechanisms, I don't have a specific timetable to address this issue gradually in the next few conferences.

Reporter: OpenStack new release, the existing environment how to smooth transition to the new version, because of the current need to stop the redeployment, causing great trouble, the current mature program has been done, the community version of this plan?

Alan Clark: Answer this question at two levels: the first level is related to the development of virtualization technology. OpenStack relies on virtualization technology, but does not have complete control over the development of virtualization technology, so it needs to look at other Open-source projects related to virtualization and how virtualization is resolved, which are closely related.

The second level, the need and other open source projects to be well coordinated and relevant work to improve. You talk about the transition from one version to another, they have a defcore project, we hope the release version through this project operability, and the vendor can have further promotion.

Reporter: OpenStack is not considered to pass platform expansion, in view of the Docker is now very popular, there is voice said Docker is the future of PAAs, so OpenStack and Docker have some overlap, how do you think?

Alan Clark: In fact, for OpenStack, it has always been very purposeful, hoping to support as many different virtualization technologies as possible, Docker may have the latest version of what you say. In our June release, we have actually supported Docker.

Reporter: The general key business Enterprise will put into the private cloud to run, if use OpenStack to structure the key business, seem to make people feel not so safe, you to this question how to look?

Alan Clark: There may have been some misunderstanding about OpenStack in the past. In fact, the development of OpenStack is very fast, with the development of these technologies, but also a lot of new technology, new technology is not old technology so mature, so stable. Like computing modules, is a relatively mature and stable technology, but some new components, such as installation-oriented components, or large data-oriented components, it may be new, so its stability and maturity is not as high as the old technology. Just talked about the Defcore project, it better help users understand which components, which parts are very mature, is a very high degree of user adoption, which some technology has not been validated, is the new technology.

In addition, we need to look at the degree of attention of various vendors, such as SuSE, in fact, will spend a lot of time and effort to test OpenStack release version. They will know that users will use the OpenStack release version for some business-critical applications. So suse these vendors can help customers to better implement these things on the hardware, network equipment and storage equipment. It is also a scenario and environment that can support some key tasks. In addition, like SuSE, it can add new technologies to better support critical applications, such as high-availability technologies and capabilities, to better support these critical business environments.
