South Korean LG's next-generation smart watch is likely to abandon Google's Android operating system and use its own webOS. WSJ sources say the new generation of smart watches using webOS will be available as early as 2016.
Since LG has already launched two smart watches based on Android Wear: G Watch and G Watch R, LG's move is somewhat surprising. But in fact this is one of LG's plans to rely on software to weigh up its weight as the internet age approaches. After acquiring the mobile operating system from Hewlett-Packard's 2010 takeover of Palm, LG has been trying to play the role of webOS in networking devices such as smart TVs and smart watches. At CES this year, LG CTO Skott Ahn has announced plans to expand its webOS to digital signage, hotel TVs and other products.
According to Forbes News from Ahn, LG will then release a lightweight version of webOS for fixtures such as thermostats, refrigerators and other mobile devices other than smartphones. But LG will also be able to do the webOS platform and Android, iOS and other platforms to communicate.
In addition to webOS, LG has tried to integrate its HomeChat platform into other home devices. The platform, released last year, allows users to use conversational language to control home devices.
