according to the annual reports from the Cyber Hacker Attack database (Web Hacking incidents Database, launched by the Web Application Security Alliance WASC), stealing money or stealing data is still not the biggest motive for hacking, Although the attacks on data theft in recent years have shown a marked upward trend.
"While economic interests are undoubtedly the main drivers of cyber attacks, we cannot ignore ideological attacks," the findings of the survey, sponsored by the California security software provider breach, (supported by WASC), have shown.
Although there were hundreds of thousands of Web site attacks in 2008, the survey also made rigorous screening of these incidents: Researchers will only look at attacks that have been publicly disclosed that involve application security issues and have serious impact on the sites that are being attacked. These requirements have led researchers to focus on the potential commercial impact of an attack and the technical problems that led to the attack
The study found that most sites damaged by reputational damage were websites of "political political groups, party candidates and government departments", while others designed cultural conflicts, such as attacks by Islamist attackers on western websites.
The report showed that the second most common attack by attackers was to steal critical information, with 11 out of 57 attacks (19%) for that purpose. followed by the implantation of malware, a total of 9 (16%), and for the purpose of causing pecuniary loss of attack time accounted for 13%, a total of 7.
The most common form of attack is a SQL injection attack in which an attacker enters a Web form or URL to steal information from a database or to embed a malicious program on a Web site to infect computer users who visit the site. The report found that 17 of the 57 accidents (30%) used SQL injection attacks.
A wave of attacks was launched in 2008 using automated tools to uncover attacks on sites that did not defend against SQL injection attacks, while security providers estimated that about 500000 sites were attacked.
These attacks tell us that SQL injection attacks have replaced Cross-site scripting attacks as the most commonly used attacks on web sites, and that Cross-site scripting vulnerabilities are more likely to be detected than SQL injection errors, but this approach is difficult to exploit for economic gain.
