Recently in doing search design, found two easy to tangle small problems, here to talk about their own analysis.

Question one: Which is the keyword submitted?

In this example, the search suggested that "fashion oblique zipper" highlighted, this time to click "Search", the submission of the keyword is the input box "s" or "fashion oblique zipper"? The answer is "fashion oblique zipper".

Then look at Baidu, when the search suggested "Sina Weibo" highlighting (mouse hover), click on "Baidu", the submission of the keyword is the input box "s", rather than the highlighted "Sina Weibo."

Which way is better? I personally think so:

As far as the search component is concerned, the main body should be the search box and the Search button, and the search advice is just an additional tool, not even available.

Therefore, regardless of the search recommendation status, the "Search" button (or press Enter) should be submitted in the search box, so it is not easy to create ambiguity.

Back to the example of a guest, if you select the search suggestions (by clicking the direction key, mouse hover, mouse click, etc.), point "search" or press "enter" key submitted is the search proposal, the search box content should be replaced immediately, otherwise the input box does not change.

Question two: Do you want to highlight the first search recommendation?

See a lot of related products, such as Google, Taobao, Baidu, Fank, and so on, their search did not highlight the first search suggestions.

However, there are also a few product search, is the default to select the first search recommendations. What's wrong with that?

Similar to the first question, it is also easy to disagree: is the submitted keyword the content of the input box or the first search recommendation highlighted?

If the submission is a search proposal, then according to the previous method, the input box to replace the contents of the first search proposal is not feasible, after all, this is not the user's own choice, then this ambiguity is difficult to solve; In addition, if the user manually select other search suggestions, The contents of the search box are also not suitable to be replaced with the corresponding search suggestions, as this will be inconsistent with the initial state (the initial state of the search box and the default selection of the search proposal is likely to be inconsistent).

If the submission is not a search proposal, how much does it mean to highlight it here?

Summary:

If you submit a highlighted search proposal after the search operation is triggered, the contents of the search box should be replaced with the corresponding content

Do not highlight the first item in your search suggestions
