The Pan African Women's Organization is an all-non-governmental women's organization affiliated with the Organization of African Unity and enjoys "OAU" observer status. Formerly known as All-African Women's Conference, the founding assembly was held in Dar-es-Salaam in July 1962 at the initiative of Ghana, Guinea and Tanzania. In 1974 at the Fourth Congress changed its name now.

The highest authority of the Pan-African women's organization is the congress, held every four years.

Its council consists of representatives from each country and a member of the General Secretariat, meeting once every two years.

The General Secretariat is the executive body and consists of a general secretary, seven deputy general secretaries and five secretaries in the east, west, south, north and central regions. Seven deputy secretary of foreign affairs, administration, finance and equipment, training and news, law, social and economic and archives and statistics. The first four deputy general secretary stationed in the headquarters, the latter three in their respective domestic tasks.

Its mission is to accelerate the liberation of women in Africa, encourage African women to actively participate in their own social, political and economic life and the political and economic liberation movements on the African continent and to establish the friendly and cooperative relations between women of African countries and women of all countries in the world.
