World Human Rights Day, Lima Climate conference holds series of events to celebrate

Lima, December 10 (Xinhua Zhao Chen Weihua) Lima Climate conference 10th held a series of events to celebrate world human Rights Day, participants stressed that climate change is not only a scientific issue, but also a human rights issue.

The President of the 20th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, Peru's environment minister, Manuel Purga Bidar, said that people were constantly battling the effects of climate change, and that the poor were the people most affected by climate change. There is a need to acknowledge this reality and to act. These actions are based on human rights and are intertwined with development issues. The conference sought to reach a draft of a new agreement that would be beneficial to the world and a bill guaranteeing human rights.
The former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Robinson, who participates in the observance of human Rights Day, said action to combat climate change would also protect human rights, as it would reduce the negative impact of climate change on humans. Climate change is the greatest challenge to human rights in the 21st century, and as long as the opportunity is grasped, humankind can create the international and social order that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights dreams of.
On that day, government ministers, heads of United Nations agencies and representatives of the general community participated in a dialogue on climate change and human rights relations.
