WIPO says the largest field of domain name-registration disputes in 2008 is the pharmaceutical industry, because most pharmaceutical companies release new drugs and carry out marketing campaigns on their own websites. Other industries with more disputes include banking, finance, Internet, communications, retailing, food, beverage and guesthouse industries.

The Internet name and number allocation Agency (ICANN) has previously indicated that it will increase the series of generic top-level domain names (gTLD). Some in the industry are concerned that the increase in the number of gtld will make it easier for trademark-holder domain names to be registered by others – at least making it harder for trade mark holders to track their own domain names. WIPO says it is working closely with ICANN to minimise the negative impact of increasing the number of gtld domain names.

For example, if ICANN were to add ". Apple" to the domain name, it would be a big gripe to Apple, the US technology company, because other companies or individuals could add a large number of subdomains to the top-level domain so that Apple's rights could not be guaranteed.
