KeywordsTop-level domain domain name management the move ICANN
Beijing time July 15 morning news, according to foreign media reports, the Domain name management agency ICANN plans to significantly increase the number of top-level domain names, the plan is expected to enter into force next year, but now has been a lot of questions. Currently, there are 21 top-level domain names in the world, including. com,. NET, and. mobi. But ICANN plans a massive expansion of the number of top-level domain names, which it believes will help spur market competition and drive innovation. But at the first public seminar, the proposal met with many questions. A number of lawyers said the move would put a huge burden on many businesses and institutions. For example, sports federations, they may need to buy all the top-level domain names associated with them. This could provide new opportunities for speculators who try to impersonate other sites, using false news to mislead users, says broadcasting, a lawyer at Turner Broadcasting. Before that, the US Department of Justice and other departments had questioned the proposal, suggesting it could confuse consumers and force some trademark owners to buy a large number of new domain names. The Justice Department wants ICANN to postpone the plan for further research. But ICANN has not succumbed to this and has invested 13 million of dollars in planning matters. According to an ICANN draft, anyone can apply for a top-level domain, but the first is to pay a 185,000-dollar application fee. ICANN will then evaluate this, solicit views, and ultimately decide whether to approve the application. (Li Ming)
