International Biodiversity Day protects island biodiversity

Xinhua Beijing May 21 May 22 is "international Biodiversity Day." The United Nations has identified the theme of this year's International Day of biodiversity as "island biodiversity". Island biodiversity coincides with the designation of the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 as the International Year of Small island developing States.

Biodiversity refers to all the creatures on the Earth's biosphere, namely, animals, plants, microorganisms, and the genes and living conditions they possess. As human activity intensifies, unsustainable patterns of production and consumption destroy biodiversity and threaten ecosystems.
To protect the biodiversity of the Earth, 153 countries signed the Convention on the Protection of biological diversity at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. In December 1994, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution setting the annual December 29 as the International Day of biodiversity. In May 2001, the 55th session of the General Assembly adopted resolution NO. 201 to replace the words "international Biodiversity Day" with May 22, as a result of the clashes between December 29 and the end of many other festive periods.
The islands and their surrounding coastal waters constitute a unique ecosystem, which usually contains a large number of endemic flora and fauna. As a unique heritage of evolutionary history, the valuable value of these ecosystems cannot be replaced. At the same time, these ecosystems are critical to the livelihoods, economic, well-being and cultural identity of 600 million of island dwellers around the world.
