The http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/1560.html ">facebook launched an open Computing Project (OCP) has completely disrupted the order of the server and storage markets. Now, as part of OCP, Facebook's network engineering team is leading a project to develop an open-source network switch.

"We want an open, categorized switch that will accelerate the pace of innovation in network hardware," said Frank Frankovsky in a blog announcing the project. Frankovsky is chairman and president of OCP and vice president of Facebook's hardware design and supply chain business.

Najam Ahmad, the leader of Facebook's network engineering team, will host the project, and engineers from Broadcom, Intel, VMware and Cumulus NX will be involved in developing specifications.

Facebook announced the project at the Interop 2013 conference held in Las Vegas in Wednesday, which will be officially unveiled at the MIT's first OCP Project summit on May 16.

The project will show how to build a top-cabinet switch that can be used in large data centers for companies such as Facebook. Frankovsky admits that the project is "just an idea and a blank sheet of paper". He points out that the switch will use Software Definition Network (SDN) technology to make it irrelevant to the operating system. The goal of OCP is to create clean, independent component specifications that can be easily interchanged and seamlessly work together.

Facebook created the OCP two years ago as a way to promote more efficient data center technology development. The idea was that users and data center technology pioneers could work together to develop hardware based on their preferences and then design open source, so any manufacturer could use them to build devices. OCP, which now has more than 50 companies involved, has started to design components such as racks, storage boxes, and motherboards. (Wang/Compile Zhonghao/revisers)
